Preschool Learning Mats created by Pacifier City

Preschool learning is so much fun.  Play stations make up the classroom and children move from station to station learning different things through play.  Understanding this, we have created a variety of learning mats that encourage different types of learning.

Here is the first learning mat: Hopscotch Learning Mat

This mat is a colorful hopscotch game.  It has the numbers 1 - 10 on one side, and the numbers 11 - 20 on the other.

Not only do children learn there numbers, they learn movement, balance and colors too.

Activity 1: Play Hopscotch.  Start at the lowest number, 1 or 11.  The rows that have a single number are hopped on with one foot, while the rows with two numbers are hoped on with two feet, one on each number.  Saying the numbers as they go helps children learn numbers in order.  Flip the mat over to have children practice the numbers 11 - 20.

Activity 2: Number Match:  Write the numbers 1 - 10 or 11 - 20 on flashcards and have children place the cards on the matching number.  This teaches number recognition.

Activity 3:  Item to Number Match: Have children gather up "like items" and place them on the proper number for the number of items they have found.  ie:  Suzie has 4 toy horses.  She should place the four horses on the number four.

Activity 4:  Color Match:  Have children gather different items from around the classroom or house and place the item on the matching color.  A brown horse would be placed on the brown square.

Activity 5: Color and Number Match:  Have children find 7 green items and place them in the green rectangle with the number 7.  5 yellow items go in the yellow 5 square, etc.

Activity Learning Mat Two: Hands and Feet Hopscotch Learning Mat

This learning mat is so much fun.  Children hop along the mat matching hand a foot prints with their own hands and feet.  It is two sided, twice the fun!  This learning activity mat is great great for movement, balance and learning to place the proper hand or foot in the right place.  Kids could also try and do it in reverse.  That should be pretty fun and funny.

Learning Activity Mat Number 3:  The Maze Mat

This learning mat mat features a maze on each side.  One is easier than the other.  Children can drive a car through the maze, walk a mini figure through it or walk it.  This is a great problem solving activity.

Learning Activity Mat Number 4: Alphabet Hop

Activity 1: Alphabet Hop: This simple learning mat has half the alphabet on each side.  Each letter, both capital and lower case, is contained by a square.  The ideas is to have the child hop from letter to letter in alphabetical order.

Activity 2: Another option is to use alphabet flash cards and have the children place the cards in the mat in the matching letter square.

Activity 3: Kids could also place objects found around the room in the square that has the letter that the object starts with.  This would be an advanced activity for preschoolers, but would work will for elementary aged students.

Older Kids Activity: Kids could hop from letter to letter forming words.  This is an activity for older kids too.

These are the first four mats that we have created for little learners.  They are yoga mats and are easy to clean, easy to store and usable year after year.  They are a great investment for any preschool classroom and could be fun for elementary students, after school programs and summer camps too.

We look forward to sharing more of our preschool learning supplies as time goes on.  Please comment your thoughts and ideas in the comments section below.  We look forward to hearing from you.
